Skala is the main port and largest settlement of Patmos, the northern Dodecanese island where the Book of Revelation was written. The harbour wraps around a horseshoe bay on the east coast, with a working ferry quay, the visiting yacht moorings on the south side, and a single row of seafront tavernas. Above Skala, the hilltop village of Chora (a 20-minute walk up) holds the fortified 11th-century Monastery of Saint John the Theologian (UNESCO) and the Cave of the Apocalypse where Saint John dictated Revelation. Day-sail beaches reach Psili Ammos (a 200-metre sand cove on the south coast, reachable only by boat or hike) and Lambi (multi-colour pebble beach in the north). Skala is 90 minutes from Leros and 3 hours from Lipsi. Season runs May through October.
