Thailand sits in the centre of mainland Southeast Asia, with two distinct seaboards usable for yacht charter: the Andaman Sea on the west and the Gulf of Thailand on the east, separated by 800 kilometres of the Malay Peninsula. The dominant Andaman charter base is Phuket Island on the west coast, with three main marinas (Yacht Haven, Royal Phuket, Ao Po Grand) and direct access to the international charter regions of Phang Nga Bay (the limestone karst islands of Phi Phi, James Bond Island, Hong Island) and the Similan Islands national park (60 kilometres offshore northwest). The Gulf charter base is Koh Samui on the east coast, serving the islands of Koh Phangan and Koh Tao. The Thai shoulder season for sailing is November through April (northeast monsoon dry season); May-October is the southwest monsoon wet season with regular afternoon thunderstorms.
